Light Reflectance Value plays a critical role in determining how light or dark a surface will appear and directly influences the design and functionality of spaces, particularly in terms of visibility and safety.
Under the Equality Act 2010, which replaced the 2004 Disability Discrimination Act, all new and refurbished public buildings and workplaces must comply with regulations set forth in an “Access Statement.” This ensures that everyone, regardless of disability, age, or gender, has safe and equal access to public spaces. The regulations specifically address the needs of people with visual impairments, requiring good visual contrast between different elements within a building.
To achieve this, elements such as doorways, walls, floors, fixtures, and fittings must provide a clear contrast, aiding in the identification of key features and safe navigation. This visual contrast is measured using Light Reflectance Value (LRV), which helps determine the difference in light reflection between adjacent surfaces. For example, the contrast between floors and walls must meet a specific LRV threshold to ensure visibility and accessibility, making it easier for visually impaired individuals to distinguish between surfaces and move safely through the building.
Compliance with LRV standards not only fulfills legal obligations but also promotes inclusive and accessible design, making public spaces safer and more welcoming for all.
• LRV is a universal value for ‘contrast’
• It measures the proportion of useful light reflected by a coloured object
• It represents a relative light and darkness value rather than an actual colour. Therefore dissimilar colours could have the same LRV
• LRV is measured on a scale of 0 to 100, 0 being perfect absorbing black and 100 being perfect reflecting white (in reality you never find these perfect objects – a bright white would typically have a result of an LRV of 85)
The majority of registered blind individuals still retain some degree of vision, particularly the ability to perceive colours. In fact, only a small percentage—less than 5%—of blind people experience total blindness, where no vision is present. Even among this group, most individuals retain some level of sensitivity to light and shade. This means that ensuring visual accessibility through proper contrast is crucial in supporting the needs of visually impaired people.
To accommodate this, specifying a minimum Light Reflectance Value (LRV) difference of 30 points between adjacent surfaces—such as floors and walls—can significantly improve the ability of visually impaired individuals to navigate and interact with a space. This contrast allows them to better distinguish between different surfaces, such as doorways, staircases, and fixtures, ensuring that they can move safely and confidently within public environments.
By adhering to this LRV guideline, designers and architects can play a vital role in creating inclusive spaces that reduce the risk of discrimination against those with visual impairments. It also aligns with accessibility regulations, contributing to safer, more user-friendly environments for everyone, regardless of their level of vision.
Door Faces and Frames to Walls: Clear contrast between the colour of doors (including doorframes) and the surrounding walls is crucial to help individuals easily identify entry and exit points. This ensures smoother navigation and reduces the risk of accidents.
Floors to Walls: Distinguishing between floors and walls through contrasting colours and textures is vital for safe movement. This is particularly important in areas with steps, ramps, or changes in elevation, helping to define the boundaries of walking surfaces.
Ceilings to Walls: Visual contrast between ceilings and walls aids in spatial orientation and depth perception, particularly in large rooms, hallways, or open spaces. It helps individuals with impaired vision to understand the proportions and layout of a room more clearly.
Handrails to Walls: Handrails must stand out from the surrounding walls, providing a visual cue for support, especially in staircases and corridors. A strong contrast ensures that people with limited vision can easily locate and grip the rail for added safety and stability.
Sanitary Fittings to Walls: Sanitary fixtures like sinks, toilets, and taps should have a noticeable contrast to the surrounding walls. This helps visually impaired individuals to locate these essential fittings in public restrooms, ensuring independence and ease of use.
Stair Treads: A contrasting strip of at least 55mm across the front edge of each stair tread and down the riser provides a clear indication of the step’s boundaries. This contrast helps prevent trips and falls, making stairways safer to use for individuals with visual impairments.
Incorporating these visual contrasts, with at least 30 LRV points of difference, enhances the accessibility and safety of public spaces, ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting inclusive design.

Raised flooring is the perfect outdoor paving solution for both public and private spaces, offering easy installation and repositioning to adapt to changes in substrate or layout. This system ensures efficient cable, pipe, and equipment management, along with fast access for waterproof membrane inspections.
Engineered for durability, the system’s robust design delivers the mechanical resistance needed for outdoor use, absorbing structural movements to prevent cracks in the waterproofing. Without the need for screed, it reduces the load on structures while maintaining high load resistance.
Our adjustable supports and accessories simplify floor leveling, even on uneven surfaces. Installation is quick and hassle-free, requiring minimal steps. The pedestal supports can be placed directly on waterproof membranes, with easy fine-tuning using the adjustment key. The bi-component head features soft anti-noise, anti-slip rubber for secure placement, while removable tabs and pre-cut bases speed up the process, ensuring precise installation.
1 – Excellent hideaway for pipes and other systems
The space between the floor and the underlying membrane allows the passage of pipes and other systems, masking them but still allowing for easy inspection.
2 – Significant weight reduction
With the elimination of the concrete screed, the raised floor allows a substantial reduction of the weight on the structure, which can be built at substantially lower costs.
3 – Excellent absorption of structural movements
Being independent, the paving and supports can absorb expansion and structural movements.
4 – Floor always levelled and easily inspectable
The pedestal system makes it possible to compensate for the small differences in height and slope of the laying surface. It also allows for the laying surface and any installed services to be accessed and maintained without damaging the paving. In case of laying on waterproofing membrane, this can be easily inspected due to the absence of mechanical fixings between the covering and the supports..
5 – Speed of installation
The speed of installation ensures considerable advantages in the management of the building site, generating economic savings and increasing organisational effiency; in case of renovations, the reduced intervention time reduces any disruption to the local environment whilst works are completed.
6 – Rapid water outflow
The small open joint between one plate and the other allows the rapid drainage of water.
7 – Environmental awereness and cleanliness
Everything is recyclable, both the flooring elements and the supports’ substructure. At the end of the life of the building and / or floor, everything can be easily removed and recycled without any impact on the environment. The “dry” laying system does not require adhesives nor chemical products.

The Windproof System is specifically designed to prevent plate lifting caused by wind, offering a secure, long-lasting, and cost-effective solution for outdoor flooring. This system ensures a strong bond between flooring plates and supports through the use of metal clips, which are inserted into the spacer fins of the supports. The unique “T” or “L” shaped clips lock the plates firmly in place.
To install, the plates are mechanically notched at all four corners, allowing the clips to fit seamlessly. This method securely fastens the plates and supports together, making the flooring more resistant to wind forces.

The unique adjustment key is an essential element of the raised flooring system as it allows to control the height of the individual supports, and consequently of the floor above, even after installation of the flooring, thus avoiding having to lift the tiles.

The perimeter spacers allow the elegant and uniform spacing of the flooring slabs from the perimeter walls, offering the maximum guarantee of stability by means of a hooking system to the supports that is intuitive, simple and effective.
The clip creates a 1 cm joint between the flooring and the wall, offering space for physiological stabilisation of the slabs. The special design of the clip allows the support to any vertical coverings placed on the walls without compromising the seal with invasive measurements. At the same time, it allows the installer to adjust its position on the support head according to the positioning requirements.
The lifting handle is available in a fixed size for standard slabs sizes of 600mm.
The handle is provided with two lateral hooks that are inserted into the open joints and allow lifting even when they are already laid. It is a very useful tool, both when laying new floors and when lifting already laid plates.

Sustainable material sourcing for projects is an important aspect that is now integrated into the majority of design decisions.
Unlike carpet, vinyl, or laminate flooring which have to be replaced periodically, properly installed tiles can last a lifetime. This longevity reduces time, money and resources spent on extracting raw material, manufacturing, transportation, installation, demolition and disposal requirements.

The earthy warm tones of clay and terracotta are growing in popularity; ranging from the lightest shades of peach and clay, through to burnt orange and deep brick, all shades of terracotta are becoming popular in both interior and exterior spaces. Recreate the saturated terracotta landscapes from holiday getaways or Moroccan architecture, with warmly toned porcelain tiling.
Sculptural tiles can be applied to accentuate architectural spaces. Choose vibrant shades to create a statement and an eye-catching feature wall, or select a more neutral colour palette for a more subtle and sophisticated feel. The 3D formats offer light reflecting textures that add depth and movements to walls. Play with shapes, patterns, and colours with our selection below:

During the festival Grestec will showcase its new tile range Rada. These new contemporary porcelain stone tiles embody sophistication, minimalism and the pure aesthetics of natural stone. Available in six tonal neutrals which offer a calm minimalistic look, together with twelve sizes and an external 20mm thick outdoor flooring option. Rada ensures a complete range that seamlessly extends the calming and pale minimalist look, which defines interiors, to the outdoor space. Rada is suitable for almost all commercial situations.

VISITING STUDIO 329 COVID UPDATE 01/09/2020:
As we continue to follow guidance from the Government, we must ask all those on site to wear a face covering or mask when entering and moving around the venue, from Tuesday 1st September. Please can all visitors wear a face covering or mask until they reach the Studio as well as when using communal areas and toilet facilities.
These can be removed when sitting and eating or drinking at Jack’s restaurant and within Studio 329.

In line with recent tile trends, Grestec presents its new Wilde collection; combining tradition and innovation. Grestec Studio 329 is fully equipped with a relaxed, creative atmosphere that offers an unsurpassed space for architects and designers to develop and design their projects. The space incorporates 100×100mm samples to take away, A5 sample cards, full-sized large format tiles and a multitude of pick-up, trendy tiles placed across the counter-tops to inspire for the next project.
The studio is now closed Monday-Friday opening for appointments only and during the design shows at the BDC including, the Surface Design Show, Sleep Event, Digital Construction Week, Vision London and the New Designers show.
