LRV (Light Reflectance Values) explained

LRV (Light Reflectance Values) explained

Light Reflectance Values (LRV)

In architecture, Light Reflectance Value (LRV) is a metric used to measure the percentage of visible and usable light that a surface reflects when illuminated by a light source.

Light Reflectance Value plays a critical role in determining how light or dark a surface will appear and directly influences the design and functionality of spaces, particularly in terms of visibility and safety.

Under the Equality Act 2010, which replaced the 2004 Disability Discrimination Act, all new and refurbished public buildings and workplaces must comply with regulations set forth in an “Access Statement.” This ensures that everyone, regardless of disability, age, or gender, has safe and equal access to public spaces. The regulations specifically address the needs of people with visual impairments, requiring good visual contrast between different elements within a building.

To achieve this, elements such as doorways, walls, floors, fixtures, and fittings must provide a clear contrast, aiding in the identification of key features and safe navigation. This visual contrast is measured using Light Reflectance Value (LRV), which helps determine the difference in light reflection between adjacent surfaces. For example, the contrast between floors and walls must meet a specific LRV threshold to ensure visibility and accessibility, making it easier for visually impaired individuals to distinguish between surfaces and move safely through the building.

Compliance with LRV standards not only fulfills legal obligations but also promotes inclusive and accessible design, making public spaces safer and more welcoming for all.

What are Light Reflectance Values?

• LRV is a universal value for ‘contrast’
• It measures the proportion of useful light reflected by a coloured object
• It represents a relative light and darkness value rather than an actual colour. Therefore dissimilar colours could have the same LRV
• LRV is measured on a scale of 0 to 100, 0 being perfect absorbing black and 100 being perfect reflecting white (in reality you never find these perfect objects – a bright white would typically have a result of an LRV of 85)

LRV Scale

Light reflectance value (LRV)

Why do we need Contrast?

The majority of registered blind individuals still retain some degree of vision, particularly the ability to perceive colours. In fact, only a small percentage—less than 5%—of blind people experience total blindness, where no vision is present. Even among this group, most individuals retain some level of sensitivity to light and shade. This means that ensuring visual accessibility through proper contrast is crucial in supporting the needs of visually impaired people.

To accommodate this, specifying a minimum Light Reflectance Value (LRV) difference of 30 points between adjacent surfaces—such as floors and walls—can significantly improve the ability of visually impaired individuals to navigate and interact with a space. This contrast allows them to better distinguish between different surfaces, such as doorways, staircases, and fixtures, ensuring that they can move safely and confidently within public environments.

By adhering to this LRV guideline, designers and architects can play a vital role in creating inclusive spaces that reduce the risk of discrimination against those with visual impairments. It also aligns with accessibility regulations, contributing to safer, more user-friendly environments for everyone, regardless of their level of vision.

Here are some key examples where visual contrast is essential to ensure accessibility for visually impaired individuals:

  • Door Faces and Frames to Walls: Clear contrast between the colour of doors (including doorframes) and the surrounding walls is crucial to help individuals easily identify entry and exit points. This ensures smoother navigation and reduces the risk of accidents.

  • Floors to Walls: Distinguishing between floors and walls through contrasting colours and textures is vital for safe movement. This is particularly important in areas with steps, ramps, or changes in elevation, helping to define the boundaries of walking surfaces.

  • Ceilings to Walls: Visual contrast between ceilings and walls aids in spatial orientation and depth perception, particularly in large rooms, hallways, or open spaces. It helps individuals with impaired vision to understand the proportions and layout of a room more clearly.

  • Handrails to Walls: Handrails must stand out from the surrounding walls, providing a visual cue for support, especially in staircases and corridors. A strong contrast ensures that people with limited vision can easily locate and grip the rail for added safety and stability.

  • Sanitary Fittings to Walls: Sanitary fixtures like sinks, toilets, and taps should have a noticeable contrast to the surrounding walls. This helps visually impaired individuals to locate these essential fittings in public restrooms, ensuring independence and ease of use.

  • Stair Treads: A contrasting strip of at least 55mm across the front edge of each stair tread and down the riser provides a clear indication of the step’s boundaries. This contrast helps prevent trips and falls, making stairways safer to use for individuals with visual impairments.

Incorporating these visual contrasts, with at least 30 LRV points of difference, enhances the accessibility and safety of public spaces, ensuring compliance with regulations and promoting inclusive design.

Take advantage of our porcelain tiles’ durability and use them to create a seamless transition between indoor and outdoor spaces. This is especially useful for paving, terraces, and paths.

A guide to Sustainable Design with tiles…

A guide to Sustainable Design with tiles…

A Guide to Sustainable Design with tiles…

Sustainability is no longer singled out as a trend because it has become increasingly prominent in our everyday lives. As a planet we are far more conscious about sustainable living and the ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint.

Sustainable material sourcing for projects is an important aspect that is now integrated into the majority of design decisions.

What makes tiles a sustainable option?

Unlike carpet, vinyl, or laminate flooring which have to be replaced periodically, properly installed tiles can last a lifetime. This longevity reduces time, money and resources spent on extracting raw material, manufacturing, transportation, installation, demolition and disposal requirements.

The eco-credentials of hardwearing, low-maintenance porcelain and ceramic tiles is boosted by ranges made with recycled materials.

Sustainable Tile Finishes

Grestec offer many ranges with high recycled contents with proof of accredited environmental certifications including EPD, Leed, ISO 14001, ISO 9001:2005 and Breeam. We have selected just a few ranges below that are suitable for sustainable specifications:

Wilde - 40% recycled

Dorado - 40% recycled

Grond One- 40% recycled

Nalakara - 69% recycled

Macari- 62% recycled

Avina - 62% recycled

Grestec will reach net-zero climate impact by 2030

Grestec Tiles is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030. Our Net Zero target is 20 years ahead of the 2050 target set out in the standard Carbon Reduction Plan requirements. We are continually strengthening our environmental policies and practices, which address reducing emissions, waste, and water usage across our entire operation.

The eco-credentials of hardwearing, low-maintenance porcelain and ceramic tiles is boosted by ranges made with recycled materials.

Installation of solar PV panels

Grestec have installed solar PV panels on its south facing warehouse roof to cover most of its electricity demand. Discover more ways that Grestec is reducing its carbon footprint here.

Wey/ Captivating brick shape tiles

Wey/ Captivating brick shape tiles

WEY

A distinctive interpretation of the “brick” surface. Wey is a small format tile that can complete even the most minimalist setting with its shiny undulating surface. Wey offers a timeless but contemporary mood where the colours illuminate the surface of the small size 52x160mm, for a captivating wall covering.

The high shade variation and undulating surface preserves the perceptions of craftmanship; highlighted by the chromatic range of twelve pleasant tones to create retro-style laying patterns that can be perfectly combined with the most contemporary design. The colour spectrum is versatile thanks to the presence of blues, greens, pinks and greys declined in warm and cold tones that allow you to combine different shades in gradation.

Wey ensures the advantages of white-body tiles and the decorative features of small sizes: superior quality colours and glazes, ease of installation and maintenance. The richness of the enamel gives the surface intensity, and the small dimensions offer the perfect touch of elegance to the surfaces.

WILDE: TERRAZZO EFFECT

In line with recent tile trends, Grestec presents its new Wilde collection; combining tradition and innovation. Wilde reinterprets the famous Venetian ‘terrazzo’ in a contemporary key, combining the appearance of crushed marble fragments with the excellent properties of full body porcelain stoneware. Specifying Tiles for Care and Dementia Projects

Specifying Tiles for Care and Dementia Projects

Specifying tiles for care & dementia projects

Importance of Tile Selection in Care Environments
When designing care facilities, especially for individuals with dementia, selecting the right tiles is crucial. Age-related changes and cognitive impairments can complicate navigation within a building. To assist in this process, we’ve created a comprehensive guide assessing tile suitability for dementia-friendly environments.

Floor coverings play a significant role in creating a dementia-friendly environment, affecting both safety and spatial orientation. When chosen carefully, tiles can enhance confidence, security, and independence for residents.

Key Considerations for Colour and Contrast

A carefully considered colour scheme is essential in dementia units to promote comfort for residents. Light Reflectance Values (LRVs)—the amount of visible light reflected from walls and floors—are vital in this regard. For optimal contrast, the floor and walls should differ by at least 30 LRV points. Effective colour contrast between furniture, floors, and walls can reduce trip hazards and encourage greater independence for individuals with visual impairments.

Effective colour contrast between furniture, floors, and walls can reduce trip hazards and encourage greater independence for individuals with visual impairments.

Utilising Colour and Contrast Effectively

Identifying Spaces: Strategic use of colour and contrast allows individuals with dementia and sight loss to easily identify rooms and key features, facilitating independent living.

• Highlighting Hazards: Use contrasting colours to draw attention to potential dangers, such as sharp edges and steps. For example, contrasting step edges with stair treads enhances safety by visually signalling changes in flooring levels.

• Emphasising Key Features: Ensure that important elements like switches, railings, and furniture are in contrasting colours, making them easier to locate. For instance, doorways and handles should stand out against walls to assist with navigation.

• Enhancing Visibility in Bathrooms: Using contrasting colours for toilet seats and surrounding surfaces improves visibility, making it easier for residents to identify restrooms.

Designing Entrances and Exits

Effective design of entrances and exits is vital for individuals with sight loss and dementia, allowing for smooth transitions between rooms and outdoor spaces.

Design Recommendations

• Entrance Matting: Consider high-quality entrance matting to minimise slip risks from wet floors. Properly designed matting captures dirt and moisture, preventing it from spreading into the building.

• Accessibility: Doorways should be wide enough for individuals with varying mobility levels, and external entries should facilitate easy access to outdoor areas. Keep thresholds as low as possible to reduce trip hazards.

Optimising Bathrooms and Wet Areas

Thoughtful bathroom design can enhance independence in personal hygiene tasks.

Design Features to Consider

• Low-Profile Shower Trays: These minimize trip hazards and improve access to shower areas.

• Contrasting Toilet Seats: Ensure toilet seats are a different colour from surrounding surfaces for easier identification.

• Differentiated Door Colours: Use distinct colours for bathroom doors, supplemented with signage or imagery to aid memory.

Kitchen Design for Independence

Thoughtful bathroom design can enhance independence in personal hygiene tasks.

Design Strategies

• Use of Contrast: Incorporate contrasting handles on kitchen cupboards and drawers to enhance visibility. For instance, red handles on white cabinetry create effective contrasts.

• Solid Colour Worktops: Opt for solid, matt-finish worktops to reduce glare and visual clutter, making the kitchen more user-friendly. Light-coloured surfaces can maximize light distribution, enhancing visibility.

2018 Emerging Tile Trends

2018 Emerging Tile Trends

NEW NEUTRALS

The grey and white colour trend has steadily shifted as we enter 2018 into a warmer and refreshing pallet of greige, sage green, powdery peach, taupe and sultry blue hues. 2018 shades are set to be modern and simplistic but with a touch of warmth. These mellow shades are perfect to introduce colour into the interior without it being too over-whelming, and to establish an earthy organic style.

FRESH GEOMETRIC

Designers are continuously seeking ways to push the boundaries to create something not yet seen before and mixing shapes with materials in a way not yet explored. This year we will see even more irregular geometric tile shapes, in rich bold shades, as well as vintage handcrafted styled shapes. The fresh geometric trend offers a fun bold style to interior designs.

TERRAZZO STYLE

We have begun to see an emergence of terrazzo tiles over the past year, and 2018 welcomes the artisanal style tiles as a key interior trend. The return of terrazzo is inspired by the popularity of concrete look tiles, with fine granules of granite, marble and cement embedded within. The terrazzo style is set to be on par with the Calacatta marble trend which ruled 2017. Discover Merlara and Cocoon porcelain tiles to create the look.

DECORATIVE TEXTURES

Subtle surface textures and richly embossed tiles are a growing interior trend that offer a subtle tactile look with the use of a singular colour. These tactile elements can be used to create stunning decorative impressions but with a delicate approach. Floral embossed tiles also add to the botanical trend which emerged in 2017. The tactile patterns combined with the hard surface of porcelain brings a stunning softness and feeling of nostalgia and individuality to any interior space.

WOODEN PARQUET HERRINGBONE

Parquet floor tiling will be making a huge comeback in 2018, with more designs featuring the trend, predominantly in wood effect. Herringbone flooring adds a great sense of style and fluidity to interior settings for an incredibly modern look. Wood effect tiles have been growing in popularity for a while now, but the formats they are presented in continues to change, keeping the look fresh and interesting.

HANDCRAFTED STYLE

A handmade style signals a broad shift away from clean, minimal surfaces, to embrace the ‘perfect imperfection’ interior trend. The unique, tactile qualities of each tile brings a stunning, relaxed beauty to interior designs.

Slip resistance/ Pendulum test (PTV) advice

Slip resistance/ Pendulum test (PTV) advice

Pendulum Test (PTV) explained

The Pendulum test measures dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF). The test is designed to replicate a pedestrian heel strike, the point at which most slips occur.

–  When a pedestrian heel strikes a wet floor a fluid film is created between them, this can cause a slip.

– This test works in wet conditions because it generates a similar fluid film between the slider and the floor.

-It can be used to accurately test the slip potential on clean and dry or contaminated floors. The test also works with dry contaminants.

-This is HSE’s preferred method of testing, because it is portable and works in the conditions that slip accidents happen.

The pendulum tester is the subject of a British Standard, BS 7976: Parts 1 – 3, 2002.

Understanding pendulum data

Understanding pendulum data Pendulum results are referred to as Pendulum Test Values (PTV) or Slip Resistance Values (SRV).

When the test is operated properly, the PTV should be interpreted as shown in the table.
This table relates to pedestrians walking in a straight line on a level surface. For other activities or inclined surfaces, the table figures will change.

The slider referred to in the test data is also important. There are two sliders commonly used, one for shod pedestrians, one for barefoot. You need to make sure the right slider has been used.

– The pendulum can be used in real workplace conditions.
– It allows you easily compare clean and contaminated floors.
– The test measures dynamic CoF (how people walk).
– Different sliders are used to simulate shod and barefoot conditions.
– If the pendulum is not set up and operated correctly the data may be misleading. it is recommended operators work to UKSRG guidelines.
– This is HSE’s preferred method of testing because it is accurate, portable and works in the conditions that slip accidents happen

COLOUR TRENDS 2017

COLOUR TRENDS 2017

GREENERY

This year we welcome ‘fresh and zesty’ greens to the interior design colour palette. Go bold with a green design scheme using our green ceramic tiles as a feature, or simply inject a pop of colour by utilising green accessories or foliage, alongside a more simple design scheme of navy (Dimension, Tessellate, Valaxa), marble (Divine, Luconi, Marmi XXL) or concrete effect tiles.
Adding a splash of green to any monochromatic interior will add an appeal of contemporary, refreshing vibrance to a traditional palette.

Navy blue

Navy blue is replacing all white interiors, and in 2017 we will see more deep navy shades across designs for a fresh and modern feel. This year, navy blue has been recognised as one of the top trends on Pinterest, with an 80% rise in the use of blue on users Pinterest boards.
Try Dimension or Tessellate ceramic tile ranges to create the look.

Rosy blush

Blush pink was named the colour of the year in 2016, and its still looking to be a huge trend for 2017. The combination of grey, rosy blush, intricate patterns and copper still rule today’s interior designs; a pop of pink can give a warm feel to any interior and is a contemporary twist to classic neutrals.

EMERGING TILE TRENDS 2017

EMERGING TILE TRENDS 2017

Industrial style

The emerging trend for an industrial look is inspired by the foundation of original features which embrace the heritage of an industrial era. The strong, explicit look will be seen even more across modern interiors, with more ceramics channelling iron, copper, brick and concrete effects for an edgy, on trend style. The look is easily created by mixing textured surfaces including beaten metals, exposed bricks and rustic woods.

PATTERN TILES

The pattern tile trend has been well distinguished in the interior design world for the past couple of years, with encaustic inspired designs appearing in areas least expected. This year pattern tiles will reach a new high and will be appearing in projects even more. We will find interior designers mixing patterns for a bold look with personality. Pattern tiles are the perfect design element to inject a pop of colour or add depth to a simple design scheme.

GEOMETRICS

Geometric designs have been prominent in the interior design world for a while now, but this year we will see even more irregular geometric tile shapes in our designs. Elongated hexagons apposed to regular hexagons, triangles, trapeziums and rhombuses all contribute to this fun and bold style to create a design element not seen before.

CREATIVE LAYOUTS

While the classic brick layout trend is fading out, creative playful layouts take the limelight. Herringbone, chevron and vertically laid metro tile designs will become ever more popular in 2017 design schemes.

FABRIC EFFECTS

This year we will see the emerging trend for tactile tiles with lined and fabric finishes.

3D TILES

While 3D and 3D effect tiles are not new to the interior design world;  in 2017 the trend will continue to evolve and we will begin to see much more of this style but with designs that push the boundaries even further.

MARBLE EFFECT

Marble is a timeless classic that we will continue to see across interior designs. But this year the style will be more prominent in large formats, for a seamless look.

Wear resistance: PEI Ratings explained

Wear resistance: PEI Ratings explained

Wear Resistance: Understanding PEI Ratings

Wear resistance is a crucial factor for glazed vitreous and porcelain stoneware tiles, as outlined in EN ISO 10545-7. All floor coverings experience wear, and the level of wear is influenced by several key factors:

• Frequency of Use: The more often a surface is used, the greater the wear.

• Degree of Soiling and Cleaning Conditions: The amount of dirt and the effectiveness of cleaning methods impact tile longevity.

• Type of Mechanical Stress: Different walking or driving patterns can contribute to varying levels of wear.

• Hardness of the Glaze: The durability of the glaze directly affects resistance to scratches and abrasions.

• Thickness of the Glaze Layer: A thicker glaze layer can enhance wear resistance.

• Glaze Finish: Different finishes (matte, semi-matte, gloss) can influence the appearance and durability of the tile.

• Colour and Brightness of the Glaze: These factors can affect how visible wear and scratches are over time.

Understanding these elements can help you choose the right tiles for your flooring needs, ensuring long-lasting performance and aesthetic appeal.

Tile Wear Resistance Ratings Explained

Different environments require tiles with varying levels of wear resistance, categorized into groups 0, I, II, III, IV, and V. Here’s a breakdown of each group:

  • 0: Lightest Stress
    Unsuitable for floor areas.
Tiles in this category are not recommended for any flooring applications due to insufficient durability.

  • I: Very Light Stress
Ideal for areas with very infrequent use (soft-soled shoes) and no abrasive contamination.
Examples: Bedrooms and bathrooms in private homes.

  • II: Light Stress
Suitable for areas with infrequent use (normal street shoes) and minimal abrasive contamination.
Examples: Private homes, excluding kitchens, stairs, terraces, and loggias.

  • III: Medium Stress
Designed for areas with frequent use (normal street shoes) and some abrasive contamination.
Examples: All residential rooms (excluding kitchens), hotel rooms, bathrooms, hallways, corridors, balconies, and loggias.

  • IV: Medium-Heavy Stress
Best for areas with frequent use (normal street shoes) and regular, heavy soiling.
Examples: Private entrances, kitchens, terraces, sales rooms, utility rooms, offices, hotels, schools, administration buildings, and hospitals.

  • V: Heavy Stress
Tiles in this category offer exceptional wear resistance for high-traffic public areas.
Examples: Bakeries, snack bars, hotel and bank entrance halls, and restaurants.

  • Choosing the right wear resistance group for your tiles ensures durability and performance, tailored to the specific demands of each area.

Maximum Stress: Optimal Tile Solutions for High-Traffic Areas

For areas with heavy foot traffic or extreme surface wear, such as cash register zones and entrance pathways, we recommend using unglazed porcelain stoneware tiles. These tiles offer exceptional wear resistance, making them ideal for high-stress applications.

In areas subjected to extreme wear, minor deviations in the overall surface appearance may occur. Therefore, in such cases, it’s advisable to select a tile from the next higher wear resistance group for optimal performance.

Tiles from higher wear resistance groups can also be effectively used in areas with lower requirements, providing flexibility in your flooring choices.

Wear Resistance Properties of Unglazed Porcelain Stoneware Tiles

Unglazed porcelain stoneware tiles, classified under standard DIN EN 14411, Group Bla, with water absorption E<0.5%, are renowned for their superior wear resistance (deep abrasion) among all flooring materials. This homogeneous material shows virtually no signs of wear, even after decades of heavy use.

On-trend retro look for interiors

On-trend retro look for interiors

Charred and Leshack offer creative solutions for wood effect flooring to create the on-trend, distressed, retro look for interiors.

In a new approach to the current trends, Charred & Leshack offer the perfect solution for interiors. The fusion of exquisite finishes & colours offer endless laying possibilities.

Charred

Charred offers a new approach to wood effect tiling by proposing a range of distressed timber effect tiles. The tiles are inspired by an ancient Japanese technique that consists of the carbonisation of wood. The basis of this technique has been interpreted through Charred, to present a palette of four carbonised colours, two finishes and a format of 150x1200mm planks.

The Charred porcelain tiles are easy to clean and will maintain their original colour, in comparison to natural wood where warping & water damage can occur. Making them a suitable alternative to natural wood.

Striking for its vivid colour palette, retro finish & possible laying compositions; Leshack has an instant impact on any interior.

Leshack is proposed in eight colours & four further geometric, distressed colours in 144x893mm & 218x893mm planks. A refined ingredient for projects of a fully retro taste

Barefoot Slip Resistance Advice DIN 51097

Barefoot Slip Resistance Advice DIN 51097

Barefoot Slip Rating Advice (DIN 51097):
A, B or C rating

These guidelines recommend using tiles that comply with specific barefoot slip rating standard for floors to ensure safety and reduce the risk of accidents.

When selecting tiles for a commercial project, it’s crucial to consider the Health and Safety Executive’s (HSE) anti-slip guidelines.

For areas where people will be barefoot, especially those exposed to water (such as showers, pools, or changing rooms), the slip resistance of tiles is rigorously tested. This is done by placing tiles on an inclined surface and determining their performance under wet conditions. The tiles are then classified into three slip-resistance rating groups: A, B, and C.

• Group A: Suitable for areas with minimal slip risk, such as dry changing rooms or areas with only occasional moisture.

• Group B: Recommended for moderately wet zones, such as poolside areas or walkways near water.

• Group C: Essential for areas that are consistently wet or submerged, like the floors of swimming pools or shower areas, where higher slip resistance is required.

To assist in choosing the appropriate tiles for barefoot areas, the table below provides a guide on the recommended slip ratings based on the environment and the level of exposure to water.

Barefoot Slip Resistance (DIN 51097) Guidelines

Slip website 2

When specifying tiles for a commercial project, HSE anti-slip guidelines advise and recommend using tiles that meet particular floor slip rating requirements.

Ramp Test

For shod working areas, slip rating requirements are classified as ‘R Ratings’ and are based on the extent of the slip risk. These range from R9, the lowest, up to R13, which is the highest requirement.

>>View our slip rating eBook, which identifies slip rating requirements for a host of working areas.

V Ratings

A tile’s V rating is an important consideration when specifying tiles and is a classification which defines the volume of water dispersal of a tile. V ratings are particularly important for areas where water is likely to be present, e.g. swimming pools, shower areas, reception areas and outdoor areas etc. V ratings are classified as V0 (lowest) up to V10 (highest).

>>View our slip rating eBook, which identifies V ratings for a host of working areas.

Pendulum Test

The Pendulum test measures dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF), and is designed to replicate a pedestrian heel strike, the point at which most slips occur. Pendulum Test results are measured as PTV and are determined as follows:

Pendulum test results

>>View our Pendulum Test eBook

The Pendulum test is HSE’s preferred method of testing, because it is portable and works in the conditions that slip accidents happen.
