RAISED EXTERNAL TERRACE SYSTEM

RAISED EXTERNAL TERRACE SYSTEM

RAISED EXTERNAL TERRACE SYSTEM

Raised flooring is the ideal solution for outdoor paving designed for both public and private use. The system is easy to install and reposition in the event of changes to installation or modifications to the substrate. It also allows for easy management of the cable duct, pipe, and equipment, as well as swift inspection of the waterproof membrane.

The floor system has the dimensions and mass to deliver the mechanical resistance and longevity demanded by the diverse requirements of outdoor paving. It absorbs any expansion and structural movements, thus preventing the formation of cracks on the waterproofing. Whilst the absence of screed substantially reduces the burden on the structures; providing high resistance to loads.

Our adjustable supports and compensation accessories can be used to level floors, easily and quickly, while compensating for even the smaller slopes of the support plane.

The installation of the pedestal supports is extremely easy and requires very few steps: the supports are designed to be simply laid over the waterproofing membrane or any other surface to be paved. After a first rough adjustment, the laying of the chosen floor is completed with pinpoint precision by using the adjustment key. The innovative bi-component head offers an exclusive support in soft anti-noise and anti-slip rubber. The tabs can be easily removed, while the base provides innovative pre-cuts for faster and more precise installation.

ADVANTAGES

1 – Excellent hideaway for pipes and other systems
The space between the floor and the underlying membrane allows the passage of pipes and other systems, masking them but still allowing for easy inspection.

2 – Significant weight reduction
With the elimination of the concrete screed, the raised floor allows a substantial reduction of the weight on the structure, which can be built at substantially lower costs.

3 – Excellent absorption of structural movements
Being independent, the paving and supports can absorb expansion and structural movements.

4 – Floor always levelled and easily inspectable
The pedestal system makes it possible to compensate for the small differences in height and slope of the laying surface. It also allows for the laying surface and any installed services to be accessed and maintained without damaging the paving. In case of laying on waterproofing membrane, this can be easily inspected due to the absence of mechanical fixings between the covering and the supports..

5 – Speed of installation
The speed of installation ensures considerable advantages in the management of the building site, generating economic savings and increasing organisational effiency; in case of renovations, the reduced intervention time reduces any disruption to the local environment whilst works are completed.

6 – Rapid water outflow
The small open joint between one plate and the other allows the rapid drainage of water.

7 – Environmental awereness and cleanliness
Everything is recyclable, both the flooring elements and the supports’ substructure. At the end of the life of the building and / or floor, everything can be easily removed and recycled without any impact on the environment. The “dry” laying system does not require adhesives nor chemical products.

8 – Strong weight resistances
The sturdy structure of the support, which is given not only by the experience in formulating the compound but also by the continuous threading between base and screw, guarantees a strong, safe and long lasting product.

9 – Better sound insulation
Thanks to the anti-slip and anti-noise bi-component head, our supports are the only ones in the world able to reduce the sound impact level up to 25 dB.

10 – Better thermal insulation
The space between the paving and the underlying membrane favours a constant air passage. This helps extending the life of the waterproofing membrane, which is also protected from UV degradation, and improving thermal insulation.

PEDESTAL FEATURES

The pedestal system is based on a series of adjustable modular supports that simply and safely adapt to all kinds of floors. It ensures elegant, homogenous paving each time, without having to subject the building to radical structural work. It eradicates problems of damp, water infiltration and accommodates cables and pipes, whilst allowing for a quick inspections.

WINDPROOF SYSTEM WITH ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT

The windproof system is designed to solve the problem of plate lifting caused by the wind in a safe, permanent and economical way.
The system guarantees a solid bond between the flooring plates and the supports, and it consists of metal clips that are inserted into the spacer fins of the supports which, thanks to the particular “T” or “L” shape, block the flooring plates.
The plates must be mechanically notched in the 4 corners in order to allow the insertion of the clips.
The system is ideal because it firmly attaches the supports and plates to each other. In this way the flooring becomes one with the system and the plates, being linked to one another, impose more resistance towards the winds’ sucking power.
The system is compatible with Adjustable series supports using the XL double-material windproof head: the XLW head.

ADVANTAGES

• Invisible, the flooring maintains its original aesthetic.
• Removable, It allows for the inspection of the underlying surface with the simple removal of the elements
• Adjustable. You can still adjust the supports in height, even on the finished floor.
• It does not require adhesives or screws.
• Absorbs expansion and structural movements.
• It can also be installed on pre-existing terraces.
• It is compatible with any type of plates, planks, slats.

BASIC SELF-LEVELLING ADJUSTABLE SUPPORT

PERIMETER SPACER

The perimeter spacers allow the elegant and uniform spacing of the flooring slabs from the perimeter walls, offering the maximum guarantee of stability by means of a hooking system to the supports that is intuitive, simple and effective.

The clip creates a 1 cm joint between the flooring and the wall, offering space for physiological stabilisation of the slabs. The special design of the clip allows the support to any vertical coverings placed on the walls without compromising the seal with invasive measurements. At the same time, it allows the installer to adjust its position on the support head according to the positioning requirements.

ADJUSTABLE UNIVERSAL ZINC-PLATED LIFTING HANDLE

The lifting handle is available in a fixed size for standard slabs sizes of 600 mm.
The handle is provided with two lateral hooks that are inserted into the open joints and allow lifting even when they are already laid. It is a very useful tool, both when laying new floors and when lifting already laid plates.

A guide to Sustainable Design with tiles…

A guide to Sustainable Design with tiles…

A Guide to Sustainable Design with tiles…

Sustainability is no longer singled out as a trend because it has become increasingly prominent in our everyday lives. As a planet we are far more conscious about sustainable living and the ways in which we can reduce our carbon footprint.

Sustainable material sourcing for projects is an important aspect that is now integrated into the majority of design decisions.

What makes tiles a sustainable option?

Unlike carpet, vinyl, or laminate flooring which have to be replaced periodically, properly installed tiles can last a lifetime. This longevity reduces time, money and resources spent on extracting raw material, manufacturing, transportation, installation, demolition and disposal requirements.

The eco-credentials of hardwearing, low-maintenance porcelain and ceramic tiles is boosted by ranges made with recycled materials.

Sustainable Tile Finishes

Grestec offer many ranges with high recycled contents with proof of accredited environmental certifications including EPD, Leed, ISO 14001, ISO 9001:2005 and Breeam. We have selected just a few ranges below that are suitable for sustainable specifications:

Wilde - 40% recycled

Dorado - 40% recycled

Grond One- 40% recycled

Nalakara - 69% recycled

Macari- 62% recycled

Avina - 62% recycled

Grestec will reach net-zero climate impact by 2030

Grestec Tiles is committed to achieving Net Zero emissions by 2030. Our Net Zero target is 20 years ahead of the 2050 target set out in the standard Carbon Reduction Plan requirements. We are continually strengthening our environmental policies and practices, which address reducing emissions, waste, and water usage across our entire operation.

The eco-credentials of hardwearing, low-maintenance porcelain and ceramic tiles is boosted by ranges made with recycled materials.

Wey/ Captivating brick shape tiles

Wey/ Captivating brick shape tiles

WEY

A distinctive interpretation of the “brick” surface. Wey is a small format tile that can complete even the most minimalist setting with its shiny undulating surface. Wey offers a timeless but contemporary mood where the colours illuminate the surface of the small size 52x160mm, for a captivating wall covering.

The high shade variation and undulating surface preserves the perceptions of craftmanship; highlighted by the chromatic range of twelve pleasant tones to create retro-style laying patterns that can be perfectly combined with the most contemporary design. The colour spectrum is versatile thanks to the presence of blues, greens, pinks and greys declined in warm and cold tones that allow you to combine different shades in gradation.

Wey ensures the advantages of white-body tiles and the decorative features of small sizes: superior quality colours and glazes, ease of installation and maintenance. The richness of the enamel gives the surface intensity, and the small dimensions offer the perfect touch of elegance to the surfaces.

Specifying Tiles for Care and Dementia Projects

Specifying Tiles for Care and Dementia Projects

SPECIFYING TILES FOR CARE & DEMENTIA PROJECTS

When designing for care projects, the types of tiles specified are extremely important. Age-related changes and impairments can often make it more difficult for people to understand and navigate a building, so we have put together an advice document of tiles assessing their suitability for use in dementia-friendly environments.
Floor coverings are an essential factor when designing a dementia friendly environment as it has an impact not only on the safety and orientation of a space but, when used correctly, can help provide confidence, security and independence.
For a dementia unit, it is imperative to provide the correct colour scheme in order for the patients to feel comfortable. Light reflectance values (LRVs), which refer to the amount of visible light reflected from the walls + floor, play a large part in this. The floor and walls need to contrast by a minimum of 30 points. When designing for people with a visual impairment, good colour contrast between furniture, floors and walls will reduce trips and falls and encourage independence.

COLOUR AND CONTRAST/
Colour and contrast can both be used to enable people with sight loss and dementia to identify different rooms and key features inside and outside of their homes. Good use of colour and contrast can facilitate independent living, by supporting people to find their way around unassisted.

CONTRASTING POTENTIAL HAZARDS/
Colour and contrast can be used to highlight hazards. For example, highlighting sharp edges with colours draws attention to the danger that they may pose.

Step edge that are contrasted to stair treads and risers improve safely by helping to visually reinforce the change from flat surfaces to steps.

CONTRASTING KEY FEATURES/
Using a colour that contrasts with the background draws attention to key features. For example, it can be easier to locate and use switches and sockets, railings and handrails that are of contrasting colour to the wall.

Having furniture in colours which contrasts with walls and flooring helps people with dementia and sight loss to recognise where they are and to find their way around.

Having doorways that are in a contrasting colour to the surrounding walls, and door/window handles that contrast with the doors/ windows help people to use them.

Toilet seats in colours that contrast with the toilet and with other nearby surfaces can help make these more visible.

POINTS FOR REFLECTION AND FURTHER CONSIDERATION/
Contrasting edges could be perceived as a barrier by some people with dementia. In such circumstances stark contrasts at floor level might become a hazard. In making changes to a person’s home or living spaces it is important to consider what that person needs and wants, and to achieve the appropriate balance between protecting them from potential hazards and supporting their independence and freedom of choice.

Consideration should be given to how contrast is used to highlight key features and hazards. Using the same colours or ways of contrasting both could lead to confusion. Care must be taken to ensure there is no risk of hazards being mistaken for important features and vice versa. People may not always find it easy to remember the significance of colours, so it may be helpful to have other visual cues in addition to colour and/or contrast differentiation, e.g. appropriate pictures or signage.

VIEW THE GRESTEC PRODUCT INSPO/ CARE PROJECTS BOOKLET ONLINE/

ENTRANCE & EXITS/
Good design of entrances and exits is important for people with sight loss and dementia. With good design of both internal and external entrances and exits, people with dementia and sight loss will be able to move easily between rooms and to enter and leave buildings freely.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS/
Entrance matting should be considered when designing entrance and exits, because when a floor becomes wet from footfall, the likelihood of slip related accidents inevitably becomes greater. Adequate entrance matting can significantly alleviate this problem of walked in contaminants. Well structured entrance matting, that has an adequate walk-off length, captures the dirt and moisture at the entrance, and virtually eliminates any dirt, debris or moisture being tracked any further into the facility. People very rarely stop to wipe their feet in a public building so it’s important to factor in, not just the type of matting (such as aluminium, PVC/carpet) but also the length of matting, and whether the preferred cleaning method works best with an open or closed surface design.

Whether in people’s own homes or in care homes, all doorways should be wide enough to be easily accessible for people with different levels of mobility. Additionally, external entrances and exits should be designed to provide easy access to outdoor spaces.

Door thresholds should be as low as possible because thresholds which are not flush to the floor can be trip hazards.

BATHROOMS + WET AREAS/
Good bathroom design can support more independence with washing, toileting and personal hygiene. Good design can also help with identification of the toilet and bathroom, especially during the night.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS/
Low-profile shower trays make it easier for people to get into and out of shower cubicles and present less risk of people tripping. Some people may also find wet rooms a helpful alternative.

Toilet seats which contrast with the toilet and bathroom surfaces help people to find the toilet.

Differenciating doors with different colours can help people identify the location of the bathroom. Supplementing this with appropriate signage or pictures is helpful as some people may not always be able to remember the significance of door colours.

KITCHENS/
Good layout and design of kitchens can make preparation of food and drink easier and thus facilitate independent living for people with sight loss and dementia.

DESIGN CONSIDERATIONS/
It can be helpful to people to make use of contrast in the kitchen. For example, contrasting handles or knobs on cupboard doors and kitchen drawers are more easily identifiable. Contrast can be achieved using colour, e.g. red coloured handles on white kitchen fittings, or a contrasting tone of the same colour, e.g. dark blue handles on pale blue cupboard doors.

Worktops which are of a solid colour rather than patterned and which have a matt finish to them are easier for people to work at, since matt finishes result in less glare than highly polished gloss finishes, and solid colours reduce the possibility of visual clutter.

Some people benefit from light coloured worktops in the kitchen as lighter colours help to maximise the distribution of light and to make the most of people’s visual capabilities. This is not the case for everyone, so it is important to find out people’s personal preferences when considering changes.

2018 Emerging Tile Trends

2018 Emerging Tile Trends

NEW NEUTRALS

The grey and white colour trend has steadily shifted as we enter 2018 into a warmer and refreshing pallet of greige, sage green, powdery peach, taupe and sultry blue hues. 2018 shades are set to be modern and simplistic but with a touch of warmth. These mellow shades are perfect to introduce colour into the interior without it being too over-whelming, and to establish an earthy organic style.

FRESH GEOMETRIC

Designers are continuously seeking ways to push the boundaries to create something not yet seen before and mixing shapes with materials in a way not yet explored. This year we will see even more irregular geometric tile shapes, in rich bold shades, as well as vintage handcrafted styled shapes. The fresh geometric trend offers a fun bold style to interior designs.

TERRAZZO STYLE

We have begun to see an emergence of terrazzo tiles over the past year, and 2018 welcomes the artisanal style tiles as a key interior trend. The return of terrazzo is inspired by the popularity of concrete look tiles, with fine granules of granite, marble and cement embedded within. The terrazzo style is set to be on par with the Calacatta marble trend which ruled 2017. Discover Merlara and Cocoon porcelain tiles to create the look.

DECORATIVE TEXTURES

Subtle surface textures and richly embossed tiles are a growing interior trend that offer a subtle tactile look with the use of a singular colour. These tactile elements can be used to create stunning decorative impressions but with a delicate approach. Floral embossed tiles also add to the botanical trend which emerged in 2017. The tactile patterns combined with the hard surface of porcelain brings a stunning softness and feeling of nostalgia and individuality to any interior space.

WOODEN PARQUET HERRINGBONE

Parquet floor tiling will be making a huge comeback in 2018, with more designs featuring the trend, predominantly in wood effect. Herringbone flooring adds a great sense of style and fluidity to interior settings for an incredibly modern look. Wood effect tiles have been growing in popularity for a while now, but the formats they are presented in continues to change, keeping the look fresh and interesting.

HANDCRAFTED STYLE

A handmade style signals a broad shift away from clean, minimal surfaces, to embrace the ‘perfect imperfection’ interior trend. The unique, tactile qualities of each tile brings a stunning, relaxed beauty to interior designs.

Slip resistance/ Pendulum test (PTV) advice

Slip resistance/ Pendulum test (PTV) advice

– The Pendulum test measures dynamic coefficient of friction (CoF). The test is designed to replicate a pedestrian heel strike, the point at which most slips occur.
-When a pedestrian heel strikes a wet floor a fluid film is created between them, this can cause a slip.
– This test works in wet conditions because it generates a similar fluid film between the slider and the floor.
-It can be used to accurately test the slip potential on clean and dry or contaminated floors. The test also works with dry contaminants.
-This is HSE’s preferred method of testing, because it is portable and works in the conditions that slip accidents happen.
The pendulum tester is the subject of a British Standard, BS 7976: Parts 1 – 3, 2002.

UNDERSTANDING PENDULUM DATA
Understanding pendulum data Pendulum results are referred to as Pendulum Test Values (PTV) or Slip Resistance Values (SRV).
When the test is operated properly, the PTV should be interpreted as shown in the table.
This table relates to pedestrians walking in a straight line on a level surface. For other activities or inclined surfaces, the table figures will change.
The slider referred to in the test data is also important. There are two sliders commonly used, one for shod pedestrians, one for barefoot. You need to make sure the right slider has been used.

pendulum-table
Table 1: Slip potential classification, based on pendulum test values (PTV
Summary
– The pendulum can be used in real workplace conditions.
– It allows you easily compare clean and contaminated floors.
– The test measures dynamic CoF (how people walk).
– Different sliders are used to simulate shod and barefoot conditions.
– If the pendulum is not set up and operated correctly the data may be misleading. it is recommended operators work to UKSRG guidelines.
– This is HSE’s preferred method of testing because it is accurate, portable and works in the conditions that slip accidents happen

Key trends at the 100% Design Show

Here’s a snapshot of some of the key interior trends and ranges you may have seen or missed at the 100% Design Show last week. Discover the trends below:

Handcrafted style

A handmade style signals a broad shift away from clean, minimal surfaces, to embrace the ‘perfect imperfection’ interior trend.

Industrial – Brick effect

The strong, explicit look of raw brick creates a modern interior. More ceramics are channelling iron, copper, brick and concrete effects for an edgy, on trend style. The look is easily created by mixing textured surfaces including beaten metals, exposed bricks and rustic woods.

Timeless marble continues to trend across interior designs, but now try pairing the luxurious refined marble details with raw concrete materials to bring a new freshness to designs.

COLOUR TRENDS 2017

COLOUR TRENDS 2017

GREENERY

This year we welcome ‘fresh and zesty’ greens to the interior design colour palette. Go bold with a green design scheme using our green ceramic tiles as a feature, or simply inject a pop of colour by utilising green accessories or foliage, alongside a more simple design scheme of navy (Dimension, Tessellate, Valaxa), marble (Divine, Luconi, Marmi XXL) or concrete effect tiles.
Adding a splash of green to any monochromatic interior will add an appeal of contemporary, refreshing vibrance to a traditional palette.
tactility-green fessurato-ras42457-setting-1

Navy blue

Navy blue is replacing all white interiors, and in 2017 we will see more deep navy shades across designs for a fresh and modern feel. This year, navy blue has been recognised as one of the top trends on Pinterest, with an 80% rise in the use of blue on users Pinterest boards.
Try Dimension or Tessellate ceramic tile ranges to create the look.
dimension-ram42460-ram42460flow-setting-2 dimension-ram42460dia-setting-2

Rosy blush

Blush pink was named the colour of the year in 2016, and its still looking to be a huge trend for 2017. The combination of grey, rosy blush, intricate patterns and copper still rule today’s interior designs; a pop of pink can give a warm feel to any interior and is a contemporary twist to classic neutrals.

EMERGING TILE TRENDS 2017

EMERGING TILE TRENDS 2017

Industrial style

The emerging trend for an industrial look is inspired by the foundation of original features which embrace the heritage of an industrial era. The strong, explicit look will be seen even more across modern interiors, with more ceramics channelling iron, copper, brick and concrete effects for an edgy, on trend style. The look is easily created by mixing textured surfaces including beaten metals, exposed bricks and rustic woods.

industrial-glass   ancoats   stage

PATTERN TILES

The pattern tile trend has been well distinguished in the interior design world for the past couple of years, with encaustic inspired designs appearing in areas least expected. This year pattern tiles will reach a new high and will be appearing in projects even more. We will find interior designers mixing patterns for a bold look with personality. Pattern tiles are the perfect design element to inject a pop of colour or add depth to a simple design scheme.

samar emperor  orla-patterns

GEOMETRICS

Geometric designs have been prominent in the interior design world for a while now, but this year we will see even more irregular geometric tile shapes in our designs. Elongated hexagons apposed to regular hexagons, triangles, trapeziums and rhombuses all contribute to this fun and bold style to create a design element not seen before.

orla-geometric   play-geometric   binny-geometric

CREATIVE LAYOUTS

While the classic brick layout trend is fading out, creative playful layouts take the limelight. Herringbone, chevron and vertically laid metro tile designs will become ever more popular in 2017 design schemes.

umbra   lavara   play

FABRIC EFFECTS

This year we will see the emerging trend for tactile tiles with lined and fabric finishes.

camp-fabrics   orla-fabric   hard-leather-fabric

3D TILES

While 3D and 3D effect tiles are not new to the interior design world;  in 2017 the trend will continue to evolve and we will begin to see much more of this style but with designs that push the boundaries even further.

capra-3d   ora-3d   rombo-3d

MARBLE EFFECT

Marble is a timeless classic that we will continue to see across interior designs. But this year the style will be more prominent in large formats, for a seamless look.

Wear resistance: PEI Ratings explained

Wear resistance: PEI Ratings explained

WEAR RESISTANCE: PEI RATINGS EXPLAINED

Wear-resistance properties of glazed vitreous and porcelain stoneware tiles in accordance with EN ISO 10545-7.

All floor coverings are exposed to wear. The extent of wear is primarily dependent on the following factors:

• Frequency of use

• Degree of soiling and cleaning conditions

• Type of mechanical stress through manner in which the floor is walked, driven upon

• The hardness of the glaze

• The thickness of the glaze layer

• The glaze finish (matt, semi-matt, gloss)

• The colour and brightness of the glaze

Different situations require tiles of a different wear resistance. Wear resistance groups are identified as 0, I, II, III, IV & V and classified as below:

0 Lightest stress: Unsuitable for the floor area

I Very light stress: For floors in areas subject to very infrequent use, (soft-soled shoes) and no abrasive contamination. Examples: bedrooms and bathrooms in private homes.

II Light stress: For floors in areas subject to infrequent use, (normal street shoes) and small amounts of abrasive contamination. Examples: Private homes, with the exception of kitchens, stairs, terraces, loggias.

III Medium stress: For floors in areas subject to frequent use, (normal street shoes) and abrasive contamination. Examples: all rooms in the home, including bathrooms, hallways, corridors, balconies, loggias, apart from kitchens; hotel rooms and bathrooms; sanitary and therapy rooms in hospitals.

IV Medium-heavy stress: For floors in areas subject to frequent use (normal street shoes) and frequent, intense soiling. Examples: private entrances and kitchens, terraces, sales rooms and utility rooms, offices, hotels etc; floors in schools, administration buildings, hospitals etc.

V Heavy stress: The tiles of the wear-resistance group V, which provide a very high wear resistance, are available for areas subject to intense public use. Examples: bakeries, snack bars, entrance halls of hotels and banks, restaurants.

Maximum stress

For heavily frequented application areas or those subjected to extreme surface wear, for example, in the areas surrounding cash tills or entrance areas to passage ways, we recommend the use of unglazed porcelain stoneware, which has an unusually high degree of wear resistance.

At points that are subjected to extreme wear- and this applies to all areas of application- deviations from the overall appearance of the surface are possible. In borderline cases, it is therefore recommendable to choose the next-higher wear resistance group.

Tiles belonging to higher wear-resistance groups can, of course, be used in areas subject to lower requirements.

Wear-resistance properties of unglazed porcelain stoneware tiles

Unglazed porcelain stoneware tiles, as described in standard DIN EN 14411, Group Bla water absorption E<0.5%, are considered to have some of the highest wear-resistance properties (deep abrasion) of all floor covering materials. This homogeneous material reveals virtually no signs of wear, even after decades of intensive use.

At points that are subject to extreme wear- and this applies to all areas of application- deviation from the overall appearance of the surface are possible.
